The Garden We're Growing

I'm mowing my lawn, in the heat of the day
Thinking 'bout how hard I work for my pay
And complaining that the kids just won't behave
And I've had about all I can take

And we're growing a garden in the front yard this year
And it's just one more thing to take care of

Right now, somewhere across the sea
A soldier that I've never met fights for me
And his wife and his kids pray that he's doing fine
Though they have no way of knowing
And me, I'm just yelling at my son to slow down
As he runs through the garden we're growing

Sitting in traffic in my air conditioned car
In the middle of downtown Atlanta
I'm adding up numbers of how much it cost
To drive here from Alabama
I have the right to complain about any price
That I have to pay, but maybe I should think twice

Right now, somewhere across the sea
A soldier is fighting because he believes
That this life that I'm living, is more good than bad
And I'll tell him he's right if I get the chance
And his wife and his kids, pray that he's doing fine
Though they have no way of knowing
And me, I'll be home before the sun sets tonight
On the garden we're growing

Right now, somewhere across the sea
A soldier is fighting for you and for me
We can all disagree if war's right or it's wrong
But we'll still have that freedom when he gets back home
And his wife and his kids, pray that he's doing fine
though they have no way of knowing
I'm gonna make sure my kids know how much it cost
to have this garden we're growing
